Volunteer With VITA

Thank You For Your Interest 

Thank you so much for your interest in becoming a VITA volunteer. We would love to have you on board with us for the next tax filing season. Typically, VITA recruiting happens near the end of fall semester and at the beginning of spring semester. Be on the lookout for our materials around campus at those times! For now, continue reading to learn more about what it means to be a VITA volunteer, and the activities that you can expect as the year goes on.

Volunteer Eligibility Checklist

You are eligible to volunteer with the VITA clinic if...

You are able to commit to service between January and April 2027.

You are able to commit to a minimum of two hours of service weekly. 

You are able to commit 15-20 hours to completing the VITA training on Canvas, including the foreign student certification.

While we acknowledge that our volunteers are students with varying schedules, we do ask that volunteers try to attend the clinics at the same time each week in order to create continuity at our VITA site. We are always flexible and accomodating when it comes to scheduling hours for the week. We ask that you make a consistent effort to honor your commitment to our clinic.

VOLUNTEER FAQ

If you are participating in VITA as part of your course requirement, you will be expected to complete all necessary trainings to prepare taxes. This will include the foreign student certification for TY 2026. Upon the successful completion of your training and your tax preparation requirements, you will be given a certificate of completion that will serve as proof that you have earned your credit. During the experience, you will be supervised by a staff member who will keep track of your progress and your hours. 

We accept new volunteers on a rolling basis, although it is critical that you express your interest as early as possible so that you can complete the training in a timely manner. As for the training, tax preparers must finish the training by the end of January. For those who become interested in tax preparation along the way, there is no official deadline, and you can begin filing when you are ready. 

From the end of January through the end of April, volunteers are expected to commit at least two hours per week. This is to help foster a community of volunteers, but also ensures that we will not become understaffed at any point. We always want to be able to provide amazing service to our taxpayers, and consistent volunteering is critical to that.

You do not need to meet any requirements to volunteer for VITA. We pride ourselves in our training program. Rest assured, we will give you all of the knowledge and skills that you need to file accurate returns through our site. 

Yes! This is actually one of the ways that we practice tax filing. As long as you also participate in a quality review, are in scope, and have all necessary documents, you will be able to file your own taxes at our site.
