VITA Academic Internship
Academic Internship Opportunities Through VITA
In addition to our volunteer opportunities, we also offer academic internship for
course credit through the College of Social and Behavioral Science. Our tax internship
offers you the ability to obtain 3 credits of coursework while also getting hands-on,
client facing experience.
Our internship has successfully seen eleven students complete the requirements and
go on to do amazing things at the University of Utah and beyond. Our interns support
the clinics on a regular basis, committing between six and ten hours to the clinic
per week. Our interns also complete the same rigorous IRS and Canvas trainings that
our volunteers complete.
The internship is more than just an opportunity to get course credit. It is also an
opportunity to participate in financial wellness reasearch, grow your network, add
strong experience on your resume, and open doors to new opportunities. We have loved
working with our interns, and we hope that we will continue to grow our talent pool
over the years to come.
Our tax internship is led by Beth Hunsaker, a dedicated, inspiring, and innovative
leader that is always pushing our VITA clinic toward greatness. To get involved with
the academic internship, please email Beth for more information on how to register
for Spring Semester 2027.

Academic Internship FAQ
We will begin taking applications for our Spring 2027 internships in November 2026. If your application is approved, you can register for the internship the same way that you would register for a class.
Currently, we offer students the ability to earn up to 3 credits of internship. This credit can be used in place of an elective course or to satisfy an internship requirement. Please verify your eligibility for this course credit with your academic advisor.
Unfortunately, this internship is not paid. This intership is designed to offer course credit only.
For 3 course credits, you will need to complete 120 hours of volunteer experience with the VITA site. These hours include the hours alotted for training and for tax preparation.
We are always trying to grow our program. This year, we are looking to take on nine interns for tax year 2026. Join us in making this our best tax season yet!
