Uath Tax Help

With instructions from the University of Utah, due to the impact of COVID-19, the Financial Wellness Center and VITA will no longer facilitate face to face tax clinics until further notice.

We understand this may be an inconvenience for many of you but we are taking the necessary steps to ensure the wellbeing of everyone.

You can still file online for free!

Using https://utahtaxhelp.org/ you can still file your taxes online.

Should I File?

If you do not have income, you typically are not required to file. Most students will qualify for an educational tax credit if any portion of their tuition is paid from savings or a student loan. If you worked and had taxes withheld from your paycheck, you may still want to file. We can assist you and help you claim any tax credits you may qualify for and help you determine if you need to file at all.

Deadline

The tax deadline is July 15th.

Questions

If you have further questions regarding taxes, please feel free to email our office at: pmmc@sa.utah.edu or contact Viridiana Najera at vnajera@sa.utah.edu.

International Student and Scholars

The H & R block software our VITA site uses can only do returns for U.S. Citizens and permanent residents. If you are an international student who has been in the U.S. for less than 5 years, you will need to use a tax software that supports non-resident returns. Our student volunteers are not trained on this software or international tax laws and are not certified to help prepare non-resident returns.

International students and scholars who received income in the U.S. in 2019 must file taxes by April 15, 2020. If you are an International student or non-resident who needs to prepare ther tax return, the International and Student Scholar Services Center offers a free Sprintax tax software access code to assist you in the filing of taxes. Codes will be available in February 10th, 2020.

Note: Even if you did not receive income or scholarships, all students/scholars are required to file Form 8843. You do not need a Sprintax code for this form. To complete form 8843, complete parts I, and then II or III-whichever applies to you and then sign and date page 2. Then mail the form by April 15th to: Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Center, Austin, TX 73301-0215.
